Capstone Research Seminar
Women's Political Participation and Maternal and Child Health: A Comparison of Cuba, China, Peru, and Ecuador
My graduate degree culminated in a semester-long course dedicated to challenging students to reexamine our world views with the tools of qualitative and quantitative research methods. A combination research methods class and graduate thesis course, this class was designed to push students to use all the skills they learned throughout their graduate career to create a series of capstone projects, the biggest of which is the independent research project described below.
I chose my topic to combine my passions for women's studies, health, and international affairs. I firmly believe that increasing female capacity around the world is the key to creating a better global society. This paper was designed to push standard preconceptions about the role of women and government in empowering women, and I hope that in the future it will be a valuable resource to nonprofit workers and government officials alike.
Abstract: Currently, researchers are divided on the conditions under which women’s political participation will lead to enhanced maternal and child health in a country. This paper will purport that a combination of a critical mass of female legislators supported by a centralized, left-leaning government creates the best situation for increasing health services and access for women and children. In order to explore this question fully, this paper will explore current literature on theories of female political participation and health development. To provide quantitative evidence in favor of this argument, maternal and child health indicators will be compared against percentage of female politicians in four countries of varying forms of government and rates of female political participation but similar economic situations: Peru, China, Ecuador, and Cuba.
